An Un-Male Experience
While I’ve always realized that I’m not a primary target viewer for CTV’s, “The Social”, appearing on the show realized one of my fanboy goals.
Why I find “The Social” so meaningful.
All viewers are, of course, valued from a TV ratings and engagement perspective. “The Social” is also described more generally as being “…designed for a broad, modern audience looking for relatable conversation on everyday topics…”. I like relatable conversation on everyday topics. So, it’s okay that I’m watching and that I’m there. But, I know the space is not designed for me.
Why, then, do I find “The Social” so meaningful?
The experience I had being on set mirrored the experience I have when watching their broadcast and social media content:
I felt welcomed, heard, appreciated, entertained, intrigued and informed. All of this.
All of this at the same time as also being confident that the Hosts and producers are never planning their segments by asking, “what would a fanboy want to watch?”.
I describe it is unapologetically un-male lead, un-male produced and un-male inspired. I’m being intentional about this language because the vibe and content of “The Social” still speak to me.
There are men who work and appear on the show. Shucks, I did. But I think the unapologetic outcome of “The Social” is not that men, or any persons for that matter, are excluded. Instead, the production and creative strategies are informed by values and characteristics that are not traditional male-centred. This means the content is unapologetically inclusive.
The production characteristics and values of “The Social” result in a viewing experience with a vibe that feels caring, cooperative, consensual, compassionate and connected. This vibe is not undermined by how it also feels powerful, professional, intelligent and innovative.
This un-male experience is unlike a lot of what I’m otherwise seeing in the world today in government, in private industry, in social structures and in the news.
The space on “The Social” is not designed for me. It is, however, meant for me. It’s meant for all of us. It’s provocative, sassy, thought-provoking and includes the well-being and interests of entire communities, not just a target audience.
That’s the kind of societal design preferred by this fanboy.
