Working the Carpet

Any show can be magical with a positive approach and confidence in your content.

It’s not uncommon for me to work the carpet. Not the iconic “Red Carpet”, just the carpet.

A basic stage might seem like a priority for any show on which I’m booked to perform. But, occasionally I arrive at a venue to find that my “stage” is lacking in the “raised” part of its common definition.

While I have a tech rider in my performance agreements, not every client or venue can satisfy the requirements. Sometimes things are simply overlooked.

In the end, it’s up to me and my Quiz Show contestants to make any show spectacular, even when the production elements are lacking.

This show to open my client’s conference in Toronto was exceptional because the attendees were generous and willing to participate in a fun experience for the whole audience, despite the production elements.

Would it have been a better show with a stage? Probably. Would I have been more confident pre-show about being able to perform on a stage? Absolutely. Were the audience and event planners very happy with how the show went? Completely and ecstatically.

With many years of experience, I’ve come to learn more about getting past my personal frustrations and focusing on the meaningful professional outcomes of my work, no matter the circumstances in which I find myself.

My clients and audiences might not know it, but they’re counting on me to be able to perform even when faced with avoidable challenges. You might also find that, when you’re faced with undesirable working conditions, if your approach is fluid and positive, the world is your carpet.
